We’ve spent some time putting together a bit of a DIY music video for recent b-side ‘Down South With The Chameleons’ using old stock footage. Take a peek at some Cowboys fighting, Mariachi’s singing and prairie dogs howling the backing vocals as we make our escape from suburbia.

Some of you may have already seen this, but here is our new video for current single ‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’. We like to think of the film as ‘The Loneliness of The Flying Disc (Frisbee) Thrower’.

Star of the video is bass player Brendan Esmonde. Oliver and Jon make suspect acting cameos and an unknown girl provides feet. The concept for the video came from the band and the brought to life (filmed and edited) by Aaron Butchers from Wigmore’s Finest.

Take a look, share with friends and go and throw a Fisbee. The single is out now with two b-sides ‘Down South With The Chameleons’ and ‘A Friend A Stranger and I’.

Next gig: Fri 28th September, Sebright Arms, Bethnal Green. Click for tickets

‘A great badge for British music’ –Artrocker Magazine

Theatre Royal follow up the XFM x-posure and Amazing Radio endorsed garage-psyche of this years ‘Katherine’s Sleeping’ and power-pop of ‘The Story Of My Life’ with new single ‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’. The track is a melancholic, harmony drenched, psyche-country shuffle, replete with flugelhorn solo plus some ‘la la la’s’ to boot! ‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’ is the 2nd taster of sophomore album ‘at the end of a river, the sea…’ which is to be released 22nd October on The Preservation Society Presents label.

‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’ sees Theatre Royal continue their voyage through pop song writing, but with its country lilt the song is a slight departure for the group. ‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’ carefree bounce, buoyant horns and George Harrison-esque guitars disguise a sombre core, as the Medway 4-piece form close harmony and ask ‘why do lights burn low, before they have to go?’ The track makes nods to West-Coast heroes such as Crosby, Stills and Nash and The Flying Burrito Brothers but is a firmly English affair with it’s saddened heart residing on the banks of the Medway.

‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’ is joined by non-album b-sides ‘Down South With The Chameleons’ and ‘A Friend A Stranger and I’. The first is a euphoric rush of escapist fantasy that also forms a surprising tribute to the cult Manchester band of the same name whilst the 2nd is something a little more unusual, eerie in tone with it’s marimba rumblings and distant vocal refrains.

‘A Hundred Thousand Tears’ will be released as a digital download bundle October 1st on The Preservation Society Presents with artwork provided by cult Medway artist, formative member of the controversial Stuckist art group and Bill Childish associate Wolf Howard.

Pedalo Fred come at you full-throttle with euphoric tunes driven by powerful upbeat tempos, making you raise your hands up high, point to the ceiling, jump out of your socks and say ‘fuck it!’

http://www.facebook.com/pedalofred

Last Days Of Disco – 3:15pm

Liverpool based Last Days Of Disco are a young pop/rock band with a growing reputation who are making their first appearance in Kent this summer for Music Event One. The group have a fervent following in Liverpool that is ever expanding across the UK and beyond. They have found support from BBC introducing and Tuune TV and their glossy pop-rock is marking them out as ‘ones to watch’ with guitar driven melodies carefully entwined with heartfelt lyrics that leave you no choice but to tap along.

http://www.ldodofficial.com

The Pantomime Villains – 2:15pm

The Pantomime Villains are a 4 piece indie-rock/alternative band from Margate, Kent. , The group found blindside success with their debut release the ‘Told You So’ EP Ban The Mindreader Records which topped the Play.com digital chart. These four 18 year olds who abound with youthful verve and exuberance are the sound of adolescence and yearning teenage dreams and have since released 7” single ‘Hook Line and Sinker’ with Dartford’s Dead Lovers on The Preservation Society Presents label and supported Spector and Turin Brakes along the way. According to Anthony Thornton from Uncut Magazine. ‘it’s clear they could just be the shot in the arm that guitar music needs’

http://www.thepantomimevillains.com

The Wildes – 1:15pm

The Wildes are Thanet’s newest and most vibrant musical export. Their seaside take on the alternative lo-fi pop of C86 has been making them friends fast across the South East They’ve already gained support slots with Ash and a recent BBC Kent Introducing feature, quite an achievement for band that has been in existence less than a year.

http://www.thewildesmusic.co.uk

Cry Baby Special and The Monsters – 12:15pm

According to Billy Vibes from Artrocker, Crybaby Special and The Monsters are ‘more entertaining than Bruce Forsyth in the big brother house with eleven serial killers.’ Their willingness to play anywhere and anytime has meant their bruised and angry vaudeville has grown into a fearsome and often intimidating live experience that may just ruffle the feathers of those expecting any easy-going start to the Eagle Stage of Music Event One.

https://www.facebook.com/crybabyspecialandthemonsters

The stage runs late from 10pm to 2.30am. Vic Godard is a cult icon, emerging from the 100 Club punk scene of 76, debuting alongside contemporaries The Clash and Sex Pistols. Subway Sect were one of the more distinctive acts to emerge from the first wave of U.K. punk, possessing a lean, primal sound that owed a strong debt of influence to the Velvet Underground and the Modern Lovers. The current line-up features Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols on drums.

Music Event One are proud to announce the first stage of their fringe festival. The Nags Head Stage makes for an eclectic compliment to the main stage Rochester Castle line-up of Public Image Limited, The Wedding Present, Theatre Royal and Kids Unique. The Nags Head Stage, which runs from 12pm – 5pm at The Nags Head Pub Rochester features some of Kent’s most exciting and up and coming live acts including Stuart Turner and The Flat Earth Society, Dead Lovers, Petts, Broken Banjo and Balance Lost. The stage announcement is accompanied by an exclusive free download EP featuring all of the stage’s line-up.

Stuart Turner and The Flat Earth Society - 4.15pm

Unleashed from the yielding greenery of Dorset and sent spiralling headfirst into the smouldering arms of dirty, dirty Chatham, the raw and unsettling art blues of Stuart Turner has violently hacked out a unique niche and sent befuzzled onlookers into varying states of disbelief. Stuart Turner formed The Flat Earth Society in 2009 to record and perform his third album, Gin & Bitters. The album was released on CD and digital download in July 2010, through the independent Brigadier Records. The band added “steam driven power” to his “anguished urban blues”. The Flat Earth Societies headline appearance will act as an album launch for Stuarts 4th LP ‘On The Brink Of Misadventure’. Expect another intense, compulsive and sweat laden live show for Music Event One.

deadlovers - 3.15pm

Dead Lovers are 3-piece alternative group from Dartford, fronted by the unique intertwining duel vocals of Timothy J Hill and Martin Brett and underpinned by the clattering backbeat of Jonathan Chamberlain. Citing the likes of Talking Heads, The Kinks and Neil Young the band have found early support for their ‘inventive hymns’ from the legendary Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music and will be releasing their debut album ‘Eyes Wide To The World’ later this year.

Petts - 2.15pm

Petts are Patrick, Matthew, Geoff and Sam. They form an idiosyncratic 4-piece from Medway that at one moment can be furnishing rooms with direct new wave pop and in the next be pushing amorphous guitar lines from wiry post-punk into swathes of layered, cascading neo-psychedelia without ever losing sight of melody. Soaring soundscapes combine with intense, combative vocals and hooks amidst a blitzkrieg of thundering drums and chugging assertive bass rumbles.

Broken Banjo - 1.15pm

Hailing from Medway, Kent, Broken Banjo have been making a name for themselves on the local music scene with their ferocious blend of blues and rock’n’roll. Liam Lynotts guttural growl and rampaging riffs combine with the blitzkrieg drumming of Mike Sewell and groove heavy bass lines of Harry Elvin in what makes for a formidable live experience.

‘ poptastic, conjuring up those halcyon days’ John Kennedy XFM x-posure

June 18th 2012

Spring sprung a leak, sunshine was at a premium, but summer has arrived and Theatre Royal brings to you ‘The Story of My Life’. The first single to be taken from the band’s 2nd album ‘at the end of a river, the sea…’, out later this summer, is sparkling pop. This is universal guitar pop, the sort that seems to rear its head every time that a journalist says that it’s dead. The song is a tale of friendship, break up and uncertainty and just like many a relationship it’s equal parts melancholy and euphoria.

For 3 minutes, all jangling and harmony-drenched, the song piles wave upon wave of hooks atop a solid backbeat and a slab of reverb. Ear candy backing vocals contrast with a deadpan lead, in a call and response that strides from The West Coast to the Mersey via the bands hometown in Medway. The track sees the band: Oliver Burgess (vocals/guitar), Robbie Wilkinson (guitar/vocals), Brendan Esmonde (bass guitar), Jon Gibbs (drums) refine the raw template of their debut and sharpen its gaze.

‘The Story Of My Life’ is backed by two hugely contrasting cuts in the form of ‘Bonechild’ and ‘All I Need’,neither of which is to appear on the forthcoming album. ‘Bonechild’ sets its tone of almost defiant resignation to pounding drums and a blistering, gun slinging guitar solo. ‘All I Need’ is a simple and tender ode to a loved one, recorded in the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis and featuring a piano once owned by the late great Jerry Lee Lewis.

Theatre Royal - Bonechild by ThePreservationSociety
Theatre Royal - All I Need by ThePreservationSociety

This is just the first taste of an album full of pop gems, to be released later this summer via Rochester based label The Preservation Society Presents. ‘The Story Of My Life’ will be available as part of a digital bundle from all good online retailers from June 18th and will be supported by a number of live dates across the South East.

‘sharp intelligent lyrics’ - Artrocker

Is there a dance troupe? Yes. Is there a rubber duck? Yes. Is romance dead? No! Kid’s Unique bring to you ‘Love Tunnel’, their 2nd single and the follow up to the XFM and Q TV play listed ‘Seymour Evil’. ‘Love Tunnel’ will be released digitally via The Preservation Society Presents on June 11thand sees the group once again spitting riddles and rhymes with dexterity and verve, but this time their tongues are placed firmly in their cheeks.

‘Love Tunnel’ is a tale of the cocksure naivety of teenage years, when your idea of romance is getting what you can down an alleyway without being caught by an old man walking his dog. ‘Love Tunnel’ might be the new single by an up and coming hip-hop band, but it is unashamedly pop, 3 minutes of hooks and rhymes that in a just world are destined to sound track the festival summer and force their way onto daytime airwaves.

Kids Unique release ‘Love Tunnel’ on June 11th and will support the release with a series of London dates as well as taking one of just 4 spots on the main stage at Rochester Castle in the inaugural year of Music Event One, headlined by the legendary Public Image Limited.

Joining PiL are heroes of alternative music The Wedding Present, hometown psyche-pop favourites Theatre Royal and hotly tipped alternative hip-hop act Kids Unique.

Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time PiL’s music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles (including ‘Public Image’, ‘This Is Not a Love Song’ and ‘Rise’) and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. With a shifting line-up and unique sound John Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17 year hiatus. John then resurrected PiL in 2009 playing live worldwide. Now after 20 years yet another new and unique chapter is set to unfold in the shape of new PiL material as they confirm that their first new album in 20 years ‘This Is PiL’ will be released on May 28th. PiL have seemingly returned as relevant as ever, of a recent live performance The Times commented “This was an evening of uncompromising art music, worthy of the total concentration of the audience.”

Joining PiL on the main stage will be The Wedding Present, one of the most influential and successful of Britain’s truly alternative bands. Led by David Gedge, the bands stubborn refusal to play the record industry’s game has seen them notch up an impressive 18 Top 40 hit singles and a heap of critical praise along the way. In the words of John Peel “The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!” In 2012 the band added further to this great canon of songs with the release of acclaimed new album ‘Valentina’.

Taking to the stage before The Wedding Present will be two bands signed to Rochester’s very own independent record label The Preservation Society Presents, Theatre Royal and Kids Unique. Rochester’s Theatre Royal will release their 2nd album this summer, featuring more music that ‘heads straight for the melodic jugular’ –Artrocker whilst the articulate hip-hip of main stage openers Kids Unique is fast finding fans from XFM to Q TV.

As well as a main stage in the castle grounds, Medway Event One will incorporate a fringe festival of live music in venues throughout Rochester. The fringe will feature a variety of acts both new and established, details of which are soon to be announced.

On July 28th the whole of Rochester will be filled with live music from big named acts to unheralded treasures and getting there could not be easier. Rochester Castle is situated just 5 minutes from two train stations (Strood and Rochester), with high-speed rail services making travel from London and the surrounding area of Kent swift and convenient.

Tickets priced £26 will go on sale May 4th and will be available through Ticketmaster, the Medway Council Box Office and Rochester Visitors Information Centre.
Dead Lovers - ‘Kerb Your Libido’ / The Pantomime Villains – ‘Hook Line & Sinker’

AA-side Split 7” Vinyl- LTD 250 copies

2nd April 2012

The Preservation Society Presents returns for Volume 2 in their vinyl singles club series. This month sees more Kentish charms in the shape of the melodic poeticism of Dartford’s Dead Lovers with ‘Kerb Your Libido’ and the heady adolescence of Thanet’s The Pantomime Villains with ‘Hook Line And Sinker’.

‘Kerb Your Libido’ is the Debut Release from Dartford’s Dead Lovers, with distinctive folksy harmonies punctuating this piece of classic observational English song writing. The tale of a seedy protagonist all overcoats and drool, is contrasted by a quietly rousing template of new wave guitars and an infectious sing-along pop chorus. The track will act as a precursor to further much anticipated releases throughout 2012, with a series of singles and a debut album to follow. ‘Kerb Your Libido’ is just the start of Dead Lovers quest in reigniting Dartford’s great musical history.

Track 2 of this very limited vinyl only release is the latest offering from Margate’s The Pantomime Villains, following the blindside success of their debut release the ‘Told You So’ EP. These four 18 year olds who abound with youthful verve and exuberance are the sound of adolescence and yearning teenage dreams. ‘Hook Line and Sinker’ sees the band soar effortlessly from a verse of wistful lament to a rabble-rousing crescendo chorus, all drunken frolics and broken promises. Their teenage idealism is already gaining them fans throughout the music industry ‘it’s clear they could just be the shot in the arm that guitar music needs’ Anthony Thornton – Uncut Magazine.

Once again the release is strictly limited to 250 vinyl copies and will be supported by a short string of co-headlining live dates across the South East. The vinyl can be purchased exclusively at these gigs and from www.thepreservationsocietypresents.com.

Theatre Royal – ‘Katherine’s Sleeping’ / Kids Unique – ‘Seymour Evil’

                               AA-side Split 7” Vinyl- LTD 250 copies

27th February 2012

This February sees the launch of a new monthly 7” vinyl singles club by Rochester based independent label The Preservation Society Presents. Each month two artists will showcase exclusive recordings on a soon to be very collectable split 7” vinyl, limited to just 250 copies. Possibly uniquely for any record label in the UK, each vinyl is cut in real time on the record companies premises and then hand stamped by the bands.

To kick off this exciting series of releases are two very different artists, psyche-pop four piece Theatre Royal (‘head for the melodic jugular’- Artrocker) and lyrical hip hop quartet Kids Unique. Separated at birth by genre, both artists are brought together on this exclusive vinyl only release by a shared world-view, one that places an emphasis on hooks and melody, no matter what form the back beat takes.

‘Katherine’s Sleeping’ is the first new material in 2012 from Medway’s Theatre Royal. This cold slab of alternative, guitar-driven pop will be an exclusive vinyl only pre-cursor to a slew of brand new singles and a 2nd album to be released later this year. The other half of this idiosyncratic split 7” release is ‘Seymour Evil’ (John Kennedy’s ‘Hot One’ XFM) the debut single from hotly tipped hip-hop outfit Kids Unique, taken from their debut album ‘assortments’. Whilst ‘Seymour Evil’ is casually confrontational and charmingly cock-sure, ‘Katherine’s Sleeping’ is alienation and confusion rising to a quietly anthemic chorus. The release will be supported by both acts playing a string of co-headlining dates across the South East.

February 23rd - Margate, The Bracket

February 24th - Rochester, The Nags Head *Theatre Royal only

February 25th - Folkestone, The Bar Below

February 28th - London, The Buffalo Bar

‘Seymour Evil’ – digital download single

19th March 2012

This March 19th Kids Unique introduce themselves to the World with debut single ‘Seymour Evil’. This infectious pop song by Medway’s only hip-hop quartet is the first to be taken from their debut album ‘assortments’. Full of casual English bravado and effortless lyrical flow, ‘Seymour Evil’ is to be released digitally on Rochester based label The Preservation Society Presents.

Kids Unique are rapper Adam Tilley backed by a live band consisting of Daniel Lawrence (guitar, samples and keys), Andy Wilson (bass/vocals) and Nathan Coombs (drums). Kids Unique may be born from the world of bedroom production, yet unlike many of their peers they are equally at home on the live stage, with funk rhythms and pulsating bass lines under pinning what is fast becoming a visceral live experience. One that will see the group play Ibiza Rocks this summer.

Already receiving heavy rotation on Tuune TV and with support from grass roots radio, ‘Seymour Evil’ sees Kids Unique in a cocksure mood. This is a bold brash slab of self-proclamation, but Kids Unique particular brand of hip-hop is also an articulate one, combining darkly comic observations and absurdist tales set to a pallet of charming lo-fi aesthetics, sharp lyrical skills and pop hooks.

Debut album ‘assortments’ is already available via digital download and a now sold out ltd edition CD which is already treasured by those in the know and lucky enough to pick up a copy upon its’ initial release low-key release.

‘Seymour Evil’ has just been added to the XFM evening playlist.
